The Benefits of Different Building Materials for Dairy Parlours

30 August, 2018

When it comes to building Dairy Facilities, the type of building material must be kept in mind. Usually, moisture in the atmosphere is an ongoing factor in most farms and animal habitats. The farm or milking parlor walls must be water-resistant to prevent corrosion or rot. Material that is optimal in this situation is concrete, tile, FRP, or Vinyl panels. The main goal is to provide a clean, hygienic habitat for favorable milking.

Furthermore, Dairy units need efficient paneling solutions that meet the demands of the facilities and provide an easy-to-clean surface, eliminating the risk of contamination. Wall Panels with mold and bacteria presence can adversely affect the livestock’s health and the quality of the products. Thus, it becomes a prerequisite to invest in an efficient paneling system for the smooth functioning of the facility.

In this blog, we will compare each building material’s cleaning and upkeep, installment, and water resiliency. Check out the detailed comparison and decide on an efficient paneling system for the dairy parlor.

Cleaning and Upkeep

When it comes to cleaning and daily upkeep, the material in the walls can help or make things a lot more difficult. Smooth surfaces are a lot easier to clean with a hose than textured or rough surfaces. Keeping the habitat clean is important because it decreases the chances of spreading the disease to the cows. Mastitis, which is the inflammation of the udders, can prevent cows from being milked, thus lowering overall production. It is contagious and can be spread through the environment through the used cloth, hands, or equipment. This can be a big hit to overall revenue. The material should be bright, smooth, and easy to clean for hygiene.

  • Concrete has a smooth surface and is easy to clean. However, it is not bright, and it is permeable and can hold dirt and bacteria.
  • Tile has a partly smooth surface with grout between each tile. The grout makes cleaning a little difficult.
  • FRP wall panels are commonly used in kitchens, restrooms, and offices, the sheet of FRP has a rough textured surface and rivets which may be susceptible to bacteria hiding between crevices.
  • Waterproof Vinyl Panel is light reflective and has a seamless surface that is easy to clean.

Installment

An important thing to note is the materials’ overhead cost and installation time. Each material requires a different process to build with and has hidden costs: time and labor. Certain materials may have a drying or layering process or require additional material before installation.

  • Concrete blocks are a good option for long term durability, but without a proper footing, they can only go up to 4 feet. Concrete also requires a longer time to mix and harden the concrete.
  • Concrete slabs are installed mechanically into the studs. This is a quick and easy process however an additional layer of paint or tile is required which would be another 1-2 days in labor.
  • Tile has the longest procedure because it requires multiple steps to install. A concrete slab backing is first required and then the adhesive is applied for each tile. After drying, grout is applied between the spacing of each tile.
  • FRP Wall Panel installation is similar to tile. After a backer is acquired, the adhesive needs to be applied for each sheet of FRP. Spacing between FRP must be fitted with trim and multiple rivets are screwed into each sheet.
  • Vinyl Panels are screwed directly to the studs and interlock with each other. This process is 4 times faster than other materials.

Water Resilience

All materials are not equally water resilient. Even though water doesn’t directly penetrate, it does not mean vapor cannot get through.

  • Concrete is waterproof, but vapor can still get through since it is porous.
  • Tile is waterproof because the grout acts as a sealant. However, if there is a breach in the ceramic, water that gets inside can be trapped by the grout.
  • Fiber Reinforced Plastic sheet is waterproof itself. However, vapor can still penetrate after a few years, causing the adhesive to peel and the wood to mold.
  • Waterproof Vinyl Panels are waterproof; water vapor cannot penetrate if a silicone sealant is used between panels.

Dairy Facilities have a variety of materials to use when constructing milking rooms. Considerations to process are the long-term effects that materials can cause to an operation. Maintenance repair, daily cleaning, installment cost, and material cost make a huge difference in total expenditure. It’s clear that vinyl panels can provide one of the best benefits when it comes to fast, easy installment, easy clean-up, no mold, no corrosion, and no maintenance.

Vinyl Panels: Ticking all the boxes for an efficient dairy wall paneling

The close comparison of the different paneling options shows how Vinyl Panels emerge as the most reliable solution for dairy facilities. Vinyl Panels showcase excellent resistance to moisture, humidity, molds, and impacts and have the capability to endure a fire outbreak for an hour. Unlike conventional paneling solutions, Vinyl Panels are designed for lightweight construction, and with the use of a tongue and groove mechanism, the installation becomes fast and simple.

Made from high-quality vinyl, these panels are capable to withstand excessive moisture exposure without losing efficiency. Moreover, they have a non-porous seamless surface that prevents moisture leakage and accumulation. Of late, Vinyl Panels have emerged as a primary paneling choice in dairy facilities for their impressive features and exceptional durability. Vinyl Panels help dairy facilities maintain a damp-free and hygienic environment which enhances production and helps provide a healthy space for livestock.
