Remodeling Shipping Containers

20 August, 2021

If you’ve followed along with our recent posts, we’ve gone into some of the more inventive uses for shipping containers, especially with PVC wall panels. Check out our blog about alternate uses for shipping containers if you feel inclined to start your own project. In this blog we’ll cover the considerations for converting a storage container into a building, which can be used for any purpose you decide.

Thanks to modern shopping, you don’t need a manufacturer’s connection to acquire your very own shipping container. They can be ordered online for anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on how large you need it. For the standard-size, expect to pay somewhere between $3,500 and $4,000. There are other considerations like land rights and permissions you’ll have to consider before you park your container at any given spot. One of the benefits of a shipping container is portability, which can bypass much of the red tape involved with securing space for a much larger dwelling.

Of course, no steps should be taken until you’ve done a ton of research about the logistics of the container and understand whether or not it’s feasible as a building. It is advisable in this situation to find outside help from experienced contractors, especially engineers who understand stability and welders who know how to cut and reshape metal safely. Different uses will have different considerations, of course. A shipping container that’s converted into a greenhouse will need a specified amount of sun exposure, for example. On the other hand, a shipping container converted into a living space–even if it’s temporary–will have many more requirements, in terms of weather-proofing and insulation. These may require reinforcing certain parts of the container like the roof, walls, and floor to bring it up to code.

Installing PVC (vinyl) wall panels is one sure-fire way to take care of the latter two requirements, no matter the intended use. These can be installed easily with screws, and the seal is sufficient to increase the insulation of the shipping container. Vinyl wall panels are resilient against damage from heat, wind, and cold, so quality PVC panels will probably work with all types of shipping container projects.
